SIDS - Simple Crib Alterations To Avoid Cot Death
About Sudden Infant Death Syndrome
All of those pretty blankets, comforters and frilly pillows can put your baby at risk and should never be allowed in a crib. As many as one third of the baby deaths that are attributed to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) are actually caused by suffocation in all of the soft bedding and accessories in a crib.
Keep An Eye Out For These Points
To make your baby's crib into a safer place by performing a simple crib makeover. Remove all of the frilly loose bedclothes and use an infant sleeping sack. This wearable blanket doesn't bunch up around the baby's nose or cover the head, thus eliminating suffocation risk.
The sack like design of a sleep sack includes a sleeveless sleeping sack that keeps fabric away from the baby's head and face. Another feature of the sleep sack is that it is easy to slip on over top of regular pajamas and makes it difficult for babies to roll over, forcing them to sleep on their back. Sleep sacks are made of cotton interlock fabric and super soft fleece of the highest quality.
A dangerous trend is that many cribs are designed to look just like small adult beds. It is recommended that babies are only placed to sleep on a firm mattress in a safety approved crib or bassinet without loose bedding items including blankets and pillows. The recommended position for infants to sleep is on their backs.
Get inspired by creating a safe environment for your baby to sleep. By being creative you will be able to create a beautiful nursery that is not only attractive but safe and cozy for your baby.
Removing all loose bedding, blankets, stuffed toys and frilly decorations from the crib or bassinet. Use only a safety approved crib or bassinet mattress in the firm style. Use sleep sacks instead of blankets.
For decoration stick to decorative crib skirts and tightly fitted sheets in the crib or bassinet. To utilize a favorite quilt try using it as a wall hanging rather than putting it in the baby's bed. By following these basic tips you can rest assured that your bundle of joy will be safe and comfy when he or she goes to sleep.
