If you are building the room up from scratch, consider installing a shelf over it. This will give you a place to set things like a baby monitor, various toys and other important items. The first option that you are going to have in front of you is using a changing table. A changing table has a lot of space for things like extra diapers, but it will tend to be a bit more pricey. On the other hand, a dresser is less costly, but will be a little less multi-purpose. You may also want to consider a piece that you purchase used and then refinish; you'd be surprised at what kind of difference that you can make with a fresh coat of paint. Another great choice that you are going to have in front of you is what kind of fabrics you want to use in the room.
The two main qualities that you are looking for when you want to purchase cloth for a child's nursery are soft and washable. Just assume that you will need to clean it at some point, and remember that you will want to make sure that your baby will like to touch it. With just a little bit of shopping around, you'll find that it is fairly simple to match colors.
