The Brains Behind The Bugaboo Phenomenon
You may well not have heard of Max Barenbrug, but you definitely know his work. After all, Barenbrug is the brains behind Bugaboo pushchairs, which can be found gracing the streets of cities and towns across the globe. And they're hard to miss, with their eye catching colours and distinctive, minimalist frames. But exactly who is the man who injected bucket loads of style and fun into the world of baby strollers?
Graduating in 1994 from the Eindhoven Design Academy in the Netherlands with double honours in mobility and leisure design, for his innovative bike and pushchair designs respectively Barenbrug certainly has a good pedigree; other Eindhoven graduates have gone on to work for companies like IKEA, Audi, Volvo and even Tupperware! However, this wasn't enough to stop his initial stroller concepts from being rejected by existing pushchair manufacturers as too radical!
Thankfully this didn't deter Barenbrug, who teamed up with entrepreneur, Eduard Zanen in 1996, to set up the company that would change the world of buggies for good. His original vision was to design a pushchair that he, personally would feel comfortable pushing about town; something aesthetically pleasing and practical all at the same time; something that would appeal to dad's. And, indeed, the original prototypes he designed certainly were more masculine than existing pushchairs, with large, chunky wheels and a bold chassis.
And of course, a Bugaboo pushchair is hard to miss! Bold and funky with colourful fabrics, they really stood out from the crowd. Before Barenbrug launched the Frog, back in 1999, buggies were a sea of blue, black and grey.
But more than just a different appearance to other pushchairs, Barenbrug's designs included ingenious, practical features that were created to make parents' lives easier. After all, good design should make everyday life simpler and no one needs an easy life more than new parents!
That philosophy has won Bugaboo admirers across the world and is evident in all of their pushchair models to date. From compact folding to the reversible handlebar on the Bugaboo Cameleon pushchair and the one-handed folding mechanism of the Bee - everything about a Bugaboo is about making life with your new baby easier; something that definitely appeals to mums and dads!
In fact, Bugaboo are so confident in the quality and versatility of their pushchairs that there are currently only two models on offer. Rather than rush to cash in on the success of the brand by launching a wide range of products, Barenbrug has chosen to focus on continually improving and developing his existing designs; actually discontinuing the original Frog and its successor, the Gecko and replacing them with the Cameleon. A decision, which shows integrity and genuine faith in the quality of his work.
Now pushchair manufacturers are falling over themselves to emulate the style and design features of Bugaboo. Barenbrug clearly saw something they missed - parents will pay for style and quality.
