Dealing With Food On The Go
I hate MacDonalds, but I love Five Guys. I detest grease all over my food, but I love a crispy French fry. I don't like driving when I'm eating, so I make sure the road trip and vacation are packed full of food experiences before I even leave the house.
Food away from home is always problematical, especially if you are calorie conscious, have a pack of hungry mouths to feed or have food allergies. But eating out or on the road does not have to be a lucky dip into the gastronomic delights of Route 66 or I-95; food is important so treat it with a degree of reverence and give it the place in your scheduling that it deserves.
Food in the Car
Always make sure you have bottled water with you – you can drink water whether it is ice cold or lukewarm and it will still refresh you. Juices and fizzy drinks lose their taste if they get warm unless you use a cooler, which in turn means mess in the car (especially if many hands are sneaking their way into it).
A good stock of fruit and salad items like celery or carrot sticks are a excellent to snack on without making you feel like you're bursting your gut up against the steering wheel. Sandwiches are fine too, and certainly you can buy the ingredients for a stack of great sandwiches for the price of one overpriced, gas stop "deep fill" creation which was made last week.
One non-food item to take with you are baby wipes, preferably the anti-bacterial variety. You always make a mess somewhere, sometime and they are great for cleaning off your hands after using a gas pump.
Sometimes eating and driving to a schedule is just plain boring – break up your trip by researching a range of eating opportunities to enjoy on the road. If you are on the road for more than 5 hours, make sure you break that road trip up with a sit down meal somewhere, even a burger from a pitstop is good for your attention and concentration abilities while you will be less susceptible to driver fatigue when you are back behind the wheel.
Food on the Plane
Security standards have obviously made an impact on what you can and cannot get on a plane now, however you still do not have to rely on the pre-formed, pre-heated cardboard which is normally served on airlines.
Water is usually readily available on board an airline, so you don't need to worry about taking that with you, and in any event bottles of any liquid tend to make security very nervous.
The Transport Security Administration (TSA) regulations allow you to take the following on board:
- cans or jars of soup, sauces, peanut butter, fruits, vegetables and jellies if 3 ounces or smaller (3 ounces is not a lot);
- ditto for cheese in pressurized containers, Jell-O's, puddings, yogurts; and
- beverages from home or purchased prior to reaching the security checkpoint must be in a container of 3 ounces or less AND fit in the quart-size, zip-loc bag you are allowed.
You also want to minimize any mess, even though there will be a bathroom available. Pre-packed foods, such as granary bars or dried fruit are excellent to snack on, while being sealed they tend not to attract the ire of Homeland Security during pre-boarding inspections. There is also nothing wrong in taking food you have prepared onto the plane either, though hot food will be problematical – you are guaranteed a hard time through security if you attempt to take a thermos flask on board in your hand luggage.
Avoid high-energy, fast release foods at the start of a long flight; these are just the equivalent of taking a dozen espressos before you get to go to bed at night. High protein foods are good because they release energy as a slow burn – try grilling chicken and making a salad with that for instance. Also avoid "smelly" foods – remember your fellow passengers, so steer clear of the garlic.
